Introduction to Relationship Coaching

Relationship coaching is a process where someone helps guide you through self-transformation to improve any of your relationships, whether it is with a partner, friend, family member or at work.

20 years ago I found myself unhappy in my relationship. I remember feeling totally overwhelmed as I sat by myself at my kitchen table, surrounded by paperwork and wrapped up in all my emotions. I was stuck. Even though I had a wonderful relatives and friends close by, I still felt alone - and like I couldn't ask anyone for help. As a relationship coach, I now look back and see what I was lacking: a strong support network.

The truth is we don’t have to go through relationship issues alone. Having outside support can be the emotional relief you are looking for.

Key Aspects of Relationship Coaching

Relationship coaching focuses on empowering individuals and couples to build stronger, healthier, and more fulfilling connections by addressing core interpersonal dynamics. One key aspect is effective communication, as miscommunication is often at the heart of relational challenges.

Relationship coaches help clients develop the ability to express their thoughts and feelings clearly while fostering active listening and empathy. By improving communication, clients learn how to resolve conflicts constructively and deepen their understanding of each other, creating a foundation for trust and mutual respect.

Emotional Awareness and Growth

Another crucial element of relationship coaching is emotional awareness and growth. I guide clients in identifying and addressing emotional triggers, unresolved issues, and recurring patterns that may hinder their relationships.

This process often involves self-reflection and fostering emotional intelligence, enabling individuals to respond to challenges with greater resilience and understanding.

Goal Setting & Action Plans

Additionally, relationship coaching may incorporate goal-setting and action plans tailored to specific needs, whether it’s rebuilding intimacy, improving co-parenting dynamics, or enhancing dating skills.

By addressing both personal and relational growth, relationship coaching provides clients with tools to create meaningful, long-lasting connections.

Benefits of Relationship Coaching

Relationships affect all facets of our life, including our emotional, practical, and financial well-being. No matter how capable we are, life is just too much for one person to handle alone. When my clients initially approach me, many take comfort in being self-sufficient and "handling everything" by themselves. But here's what I tell them: asking for help is a strategy for success, not a sign of weakness.

Healing happens in community, and when we allow ourselves to be supported, we create a safe space not just for working through our grief and feeling validated, but also for genuine metamorphosis.

There are many benefits of working with a relationship coach:

Improved communication and conflict resolution:

Coaching helps individuals and couples articulate their needs clearly, listen empathetically, and navigate disagreements constructively.

Emotional awareness and self-discovery:

Empowering clients to understand their emotions, identify patterns, and cultivate healthier relationship dynamics.

Trust-building and resilience strategies:

Guiding clients to rebuild confidence, heal from past wounds, and develop stronger foundations for future relationships. This process creates a supportive environment for genuine transformation, turning adversity into an opportunity for lasting growth and connection.

Types of Relationship Coaching

Relationship Coaching

Relationship coaching focuses on improving interpersonal skills, communication, and emotional intelligence to foster healthy relationships. Unlike couples therapy, it is not centered on healing deep emotional wounds or past trauma but on achieving personal and relational goals.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy, in contrast, is a clinical intervention often conducted by licensed therapists. It addresses underlying psychological issues, conflict resolution, and emotional healing for couples facing significant challenges such as infidelity or trust issues.

Marriage Coaching

Marriage coaching is tailored to married couples aiming to strengthen their partnership. It focuses on enhancing intimacy, managing shared responsibilities, and building long-term satisfaction in the marriage. For example, a marriage coach might help partners develop better financial communication or rekindle emotional and physical connection.

Divorce Coaching

Divorce coaching supports individuals in navigating the emotional, practical, and financial challenges of divorce. This could involve developing strategies for effective co-parenting, managing the logistics of dividing assets, or rebuilding confidence and identity after the end of a marriage.

For example, a divorce coach might assist someone in creating a co-parenting plan that prioritizes the well-being of their children, while a couples therapist might work with partners to explore whether reconciliation is possible. Similarly, a marriage coach might guide couples in revitalizing their relationship, whereas a divorce coach helps individuals embrace a new chapter in life with clarity and resilience. Each type of coaching addresses specific relational or life-stage needs, providing tailored guidance and support.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is coaching?
Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. A coach honors you as the expert in your life and knows that you are whole, creative, worthy, and resourceful. A coach is trained to listen deeply, ask intuitive questions and work with you to create the life that you are excited about. Coaching is a mindset, a process, a set of coaching skills, and a way of being which results in a transformational experience for both coach and client.
  • How is coaching different than therapy or counselling?
Coaching is about looking at your reality and where you are at in your life, envisioning your future, creating a plan to move forward, and considering who you want to be during the process. Crystallizing in your mind how you want your future to be and taking action to get there. If you think about your favourite athlete, they have a coach, who works with them as a whole person, spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally to overcome barriers and level up their game. Coaching is about discovery. Discovering possibilities and new ways of doing things in your life that you hadn’t considered before. You have everything that you need inside of you to create your own solutions. Coaching will inspire you to know this truth and to create a plan to achieve whatever it is that you want. Therapy is often about recovery and coping strategies with the goal of reaching a healthier emotional state and achieving mental wellness and overall well-being. There are many types of therapy and many mental health professionals to choose from and this will depend on your needs. Counselling is often issue specific. For example, a marriage counsellor will provide you with tools and strategies to help improve your relationship.
  • How long does the coaching last?
During our initial conversations, we’ll take some time to get to know one another and discuss a plan that best serves your needs. Most of my programs are custom-curated based on your requirements. Many of my clients choose to begin with a deep dive two-day Awareness, which includes three pre- and two post-60-minute coaching sessions over two months. Most coaching sessions are 60 minutes per week for the first three weeks of every month or twice a month, depending on your goals and the momentum you would like to create together. I only work with highly committed individuals who are “all in” on coaching. We can meet in person, over the phone, via Zoom video, or a combination—whatever meets your needs.
  • What if I’m just considering divorce?
My coaching is designed for anyone at any stage of relationship transition, whether you’re contemplating a change or already navigating through it.
  • Are my conversations confidential?
Yes. I am a Certified Divorce Transition and Recovery Coach and Certified Strategic Coach. I abide by and uphold the ethical guidelines of the coaching profession. I hold all coaching conversations to be confidential and will not reveal any aspect of the coaching relationship to any outside party without the express permission from my client.
  • What if I need to speak with you in between our sessions?
I am an outside perspective and a lifeline for you. I am available to you in between sessions via text and email. If we need a conversation outside of our scheduled sessions, we will schedule short 10-minute phone calls as needed.
  • Will there be work to do between sessions?
What you do between sessions matters more than our conversations. This is a time for you to be open and willing to try new things, to take action, and to show up in your life in a way that is true to who you are. Together we will decide the best way to move forward. This may include books to read, podcasts to listen to, informal assignments to gain clarity around an area in your life that you would like to change, practicing communication skills, etc. We will work together to meet your objectives and create action steps to get there.
  • How is coaching different than therapy or consulting?
Consulting is about bringing a problem to the table and the consultant applies his or her expertise to recommend a solution and define action items.
